49ers GM shares intriguing commentary on their QB situation

The San Francisco 49ers have an interesting and promising situation at quarterback with impressive rookie Brock Purdy and potential Trey Lance.

Both are coming off injuries, and the hope is that Purdy will be ready for at least part of training camp, as he is set to undergo surgery on a UCL tear in his elbow which he suffered in the NFC Championship Game.

However, the 2022 NFL season showed the importance of having more than two quarterbacks on an active roster, as a large number of callers were injured and several teams had to use four different starters under center.

49ers general manager John Lynch admitted that to get enough depth behind Purdy and Lance, the team will have to tap into the veteran QB market.

There could be some interesting quarterbacks on the market when free agency officially begins in March.

One player some Niners fans are hoping to come to the Bay is Jacoby Brissett, who did very well replacing Deshaun Watson while serving an 11-game suspension.

Brissett had 2,608 yards and 12 touchdowns, along with an 88.9 passer rating, and it wasn’t his fault the Cleveland Browns went 4-7 in games he started.

Other names to watch might be Carson Wentz, who was just released by the Washington Commanders, and Sam Darnold of the Carolina Panthers, who will both be free agents.

It seems highly unlikely that former San Francisco QB1 Jimmy Garoppolo will be back in any capacity, as head coach Kyle Shanahan recently said he doesn’t see any scenario in which he would return for the season. 2023.
