A Lethbridge baby is hospitalized in critical condition while his parents are behind bars charged with his horrific abuse.
The six-week-old’s father has been charged with assault and sexual assault.
And his mother was charged in connection.
On Friday, a high-ranking officer with the Lethbridge Police Department said if the LPS had not been notified, they may never have known.
“He was someone who had the courage to come forward and tell the police what was going on,” said the master sergeant. Pete Christos.
“It’s important that people get involved.
After receiving the information, officers were dispatched to a home north of the southern Alberta town on January 18 to check on the child’s well-being.
They found her in medical distress with the father and mother at home, Christos said.
They called EMS and the girl was taken to hospital.
“Her injuries turned out to be significant and she is currently in critical condition,” Christos said.
A 52-year-old man is charged with aggravated assault, sexual assault, sexual interference and failure to provide the necessities of life.
A 31-year-old woman is accused of failing to provide the necessaries of life.
Neither is named to protect the girl’s identity.
Both remain in custody ahead of their next hearing, which is scheduled for January 25.
