The High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Policy, Josep Borrell, on Monday called on the EU-27 to stand united against the “fascist regime” of Russia in the midst of the increase in the price of energy, and assured that the European values will “empty” if the interests of the member states conflict in the response to Moscow, reports Reuters.

“We must be united and we must make it visible,” said the head of European diplomacy in a remote speech at the Interparliamentary Conference in Prague, the capital of the Czech Republic.

Borrell warned that it would be a “problem” to present different interests at the level of the Member States. “Values will be shaken when we confront each other because of interests,” he warned.

In this sense, he called for a break in the energy dependence that exists with Russia, after describing it as a “strategic mistake” that left the supply of gas to Europe in the hands of Moscow. “Now he is using it as a weapon”, he complained, insisting that it will be “painful” but it is a “duty” to make progress in the transition to renewable energies.

The statements of the High Representative come in the middle of a debate within the EU on the increase in energy prices and when European sanctions are being questioned in member states such as Hungary and Italy.

THE HIGH REPRESENTATIVE ASKED THE EU TO SEND WEAPONS TO THE “RUSSIAN FASCIST REGIME”:

In the context of the war in Ukraine, Borrell defended the sending of weapons, while assuring that in the context of military aggression there are no “magical solutions” to end the conflict, but indicated that one of the options is to help the Ukrainian army, in addition to using diplomacy or applying sanctions to Russia.

“We do not have a concrete plan to defeat the Russian Fascist regime, but my task is more modest and it is to help Ukraine in a united way and to continue the discussions with international actors to implement the adopted sanctions, ” Borrell said.

In a more general reflection, the head of EU diplomacy argued the need for a more militarily capable EU and to jointly address the increase in defense spending.

“Nobody wants to spend money on defense, but right now Europe needs to do more to defend itself, develop its industry and improve its military capacity in a coordinated way”, he pointed out. He pointed out that if the EU-27 does not develop militarily in a coordinated way, this will create a disparity and the goal of having a European force will not be achieved.
