David Moyes hails ‘brilliant achievement’ as West Ham continue European journey
Avid Moyes has hailed his West Ham side after reaching back-to-back European semi-finals.
The Hammers came from behind at the London Stadium to beat Gent 4-1 and win the tie 5-1 on aggregate.
A header from Michail Antonio canceled out Hugo Cuypers’ opener before the home side got the ball rolling in the second half.
In less than eight minutes, Lucas Paqueta, Declan Rice and a second goal from Antonio had booked their place in the last four of the Europa Conference League.
Having reached the same Europa League stage last season, Moyes believes his side are building a platform in continental competition.
“It’s a brilliant achievement,” said the Scotsman.
“Doing it two years in a row is special, really. It doesn’t happen very often, so we’re looking forward to those semi-finals.
“It was difficult. We had so many positive things from European football that he built a great relationship with the players. It was really important that we got to the semi-finals. Gent gave us problems and we had to work hard for the win.”
Dutch side AZ Alkmaar await the semi-finals, with the first leg in east London on Thursday May 11e before the return match a week later.
On Alkmaar, Moyes added: “AZ Alkmaar had a good dynamic all year and have a good young team with a lot of new talent. It will be a really tough game.”
