A new megalithic Moai statue discovered by a group of volunteers in the middle of a dry lake inside the volcano’s crater. The find stands 1.6 tall and has distinct features typical of these iconic Easter Island statues, also known as Rapa Nui. The view was three meters deep under water for a few centuries until the lake dried up in recent years. This means that the statue was made before the place was covered with water, at least 300 years ago. This volcano crater is called Rano Raraku in the language of the indigenous people living on the island. The researchers respect and care about the culture of the local Polynesian people, so they asked the elders to think about what they wanted to do with the statue the volunteers had found. It was decided to leave the stone statue where it was found. Moai statues are made from volcanic ash taken from Rano Raraku and this makes them quite an interesting research object. A recent study by Sarah Sherwood of the University of the South provides evidence that these statues could have been used by the indigenous population centuries ago to make the soil more fertile. The natural minerals in the volcanic ash probably allowed the plants in the soil near the statue to grow faster. So this may have helped the natives survive on the small island for centuries. Each of these discoveries brings scientists one step closer to unlocking the mysteries of this Pacific island and the famous Moai stone figures.
