Drake reveals he regrets dropping his ex-girlfriends’ names in his songs
Drake says he’s trying to end his affinity for removing his exes’ names from his lyrics.
The “Certified Lover Boy” rapper is known for notoriously suggesting in his songs that he’s dated some of Hollywood’s hottest celebs like Rihanna, Jennifer Lopez and SZA.
While appearing on a recent podcast with rapper Lil Yachty last week, Drake said he regretted mentioning his exes’ names in his songs over the years.
“Maybe I could have done without, for example, shit on people during their age or disrupting someone’s life,” admitted the Grammy winner during the first episode of the new “A sullen conversation” podcast.
Although the 36-year-old clarified, “the lyrics are never malicious”. He then recalled when an old flame confronted him about an unsolicited endorsement.
He explained that she revealed how it had negatively impacted her life, leaving her to “pick up the pieces”.
“I had someone say to me once, ‘You know, it’s not necessarily what you say about me, it’s the fact that you said it,’” Drake said. .
Sharing more details, he spoke from his ex’s perspective, adding that she told him, “‘You don’t know who my boyfriend is back then, or you don’t know what my family knows. and don’t know. And if you express any form of displeasure with me in a song and call me by my name, then all of a sudden I have to pick up the pieces of my own life that I tried to build for myself -even. ”
Nonetheless, Drake said he has since “done his best to stop doing this,” but his efforts are still ongoing. “I also like to be honest in music, so it’s a push and pull,” he added.
Over the course of his decades-long career, the Canadian musician has mentioned various former girlfriends, including Keshia Chanté (“In My Feelings”), Alisha (“Shot For Me” and “Successful”) and Courtney (“From Time”) .
In October 2020, Drake called out SZA in his song “Mr. Right Now,” rapping, “Yeah, she said she wanna fuck with an SZA, wait/ ‘Cause I was dating SZA in 2008.”
Just two years prior, he nodded to his relationship with J.Lo in “Diplomatic Immunity,” saying, “2010 is when I lost my halo/2017 I lost a J.”
In December, the superstar sparked controversy on social media when his viral “Previous assignments” the necklace was revealed on Instagramwith 42 engagement ring diamonds from engagements Drake “never did.”
Later explaining that the piece was not meant to be taken at face value, he shared on a episode from Barstool Sports in February that “it was more than a joke, but obviously people took it at face value.”
Drake added, “I was just trying to get an interesting story.”
