Erik ten Hag defends David De Gea after Manchester United mistakes in Europa League loss
After a dramatic 2-2 draw at Old Trafford last week, United collapsed at Sevilla in a chaotic 3-0 defeat.
Harry Maguire and De Gea were guilty of glaring errors as both players tried to pass out from behind.
A poor ball from the Spaniard put the England defender under pressure and striker Youssef En-Nesyri took advantage of Maguire’s indecisiveness to happily kick off the easier of the first games.
Loic Balde’s looping header added a second before De Gea managed to control a long ball forward for En-Nesyri to score his brace and end a miserable night for United.
Locked in a three-way battle for the top four with Newcastle and Tottenham, Ten Hag’s side are by no means guaranteed to play in the Champions League next season.
De Gea’s future has long been in question amid doubts over his ability with the ball at his feet.
Still, ten Hag underscored his value after the game.
“He’s the one with the most clean sheets in the Premier League,” said the Dutchman.
“This figure shows that he is a very competent goalkeeper.”
United then travel to Wembley on Sunday to face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-final.
About this game, ten Hag added, “On Sunday, we have to step up and show more character and more personality.”
