GOP House chairman drama ‘not a good look’ for country

WASHINGTON (AP) — Speaker Joe Biden said the inability of House Republicans to unite behind a presidential candidate, which has prevented the chamber from beginning legislative business, is “not a good idea. ” for the country.

Speaking at the White House on Wednesday before heading to Kentucky for an event highlighting last year’s bipartisan infrastructure law with Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell, Biden said of Republicans “I hope they pull themselves together.” He declined to say if he had a choice for the speaking position, adding “I have no idea” who will win.

The House Republicans’ preferred candidate for the post, Kevin McCarthy of California, failed to win the required three-ballot majority on Tuesday – the first time in a century that a speaker has not been selected in the first ballot. The elected members are expected to return to the chamber on Wednesday for an additional ballot.

A speaker is needed for potential members to be sworn in and for the business of the chamber to begin.
