So, to recap: Olivia Wilde says she fired Shia LaBeouf from “Don’t Worry Darling” to protect her cast, especially Florence Pugh. She recast the role with Harry Styles, with whom she apparently began a personal relationship.
LaBeouf insists he quit, he wasn’t fired, and he has the receipts. Pugh is evidently breaking up with Wilde for having an open affair on set while they were filming. Pugh plays Styles’ wife, and it may have been difficult to act her part while the director was teasing the co-star.
Now a Harry Styles fan blog has released a large receipt of LaBeouf – something Wilde did in her car, video on Face Time – asking Shia not to give up the production and throwing Pugh under the bus.
The wheels on that metaphorical bus are now coming off “Don’t Worry Darling,” which won’t open for a month and is in a PR free fall. Vanity Fair film critic Richard Lawson tweeted: “Maybe a little worry, dear.”
What a mess. Overwhelming like a balloon meant to pop from too much helium, “Don’t Worry Darling” will soon face a crazy red carpet at the Venice Film Festival. How Wilde will get away with all this mess is a good question. Pugh is ducking press, and Styles would be smart to stay out of it.
Wilde should never have discussed any of this in her recent interviews, from things with Pugh to the way Shia left the press. Nor was she to comment on her domestic issues with Jason Sudeikis.
Besides all this, the buzz on “Don’t Worry Darling” turned sour this week as the press came to see it in New York and Los Angeles. It sounds more and more like a “Stepford Wives” remake.
A lesson you must always remember: when things happen, they happen fast.
