The BCCI announced on Friday the teams that will face New Zealand in the next two series of white balls as well as the first two Tests of the Border Gavaskar Trophy. Highlights of the announcement included the appointment of Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan for testing while KS Bharat got an ODI call-up.

The Cricket Board of Control in India made a flurry of squad announcements on Friday night to set the final schedules for all Indian contingents until the start of March. There were several surprises in the 17-man unit named for the first two Border Gavaskar Trophy Tests against Australia from February 9, while several key names were missing from the two white ball squads to face the Kiwis later this month.

Suryakumar Yadav got his long-awaited call-up to the Test squad after establishing himself as one of the best T20I strikers in the world, capped by his third century for the Men in Blue recently in an outing against Sri Lanka . He would be joined by Jharkhand wicketkeeper Ishan Kishan who would potentially play as a backup for KS Bharat, given Rishabh Pant’s absence due to injuries sustained in a car accident. Jasprit Bumrahwho was diagnosed with a stress fracture last year, remains sidelined while Ravindra Jadeja would return to the Indian team after a long absence subject to fitness. Jaydev Unadkat also retained his place in the squad after a successful outing against Bangladesh last month.

As for the ODI squad which will face the Black Caps in three fixtures from January 18, KS Bharat earned a call-up to the squad thanks to an impressive Vijay Hazare Trophy countryside. Hardik Pandya would go on to lead the team in the ensuing three-game T20I series with no Rohit Sharma nor Virat Kohli named in the unit while Jitesh Sharma was surprisingly named backup keeper. Additionally, first-team regulars Axar Patel and KL Rahul will also not be available for selection for either round of white balls, with the pair citing personal reasons for their absence.
