Kanye West is terminating his contract with Gap

Kanye West’s Yeezy brand has ended its partnership with Gap after nearly two years.

Here’s everything you need to know.

Kanye West is officially parting ways with Gap

Gap president Mark Breitbard confirmed the news in a memo released Thursday.

He wrote, ‘While we share a vision to bring high-quality, trend-forward utilitarian design to all people through unique Omni experiences with Yeezy Gap, how we work together to deliver this vision is not aligned.’

In addition, he stated, ‘And we are deciding to remove the membership.’

Kanye West who is now known as Ye on the other hand addressed the news while speaking to CNBC on Thursday afternoon via video call.

He said, ‘It has always been a dream of mine to be at the Gap and to bring the best product possible.’

The 45-year-old rapper continued, ‘It was very frustrating. It was very discouraging because I put everything I had into it. I put all my best relations.’

He was referring to the time his connections managed to persuade Balenciaga creative director Demna to team up with them for a capsule collection.

However, Ye concluded his statement by asserting, ‘Everyone knows that I am the leader, I am the king. A king cannot live in someone else’s castle. A king wants to make his castle.’

More on Kanye West’s partnership with Gap

The partnership of Kanye West and Gap began with a publicity drumbeat in June 2020. The two signed a ten-year contract with the possibility of generating more than $1 billion in annual sales.

Despite this, for the last few months, West has been accusing the brand of leaving him out of the creative process on social media. He also called out Gap for delaying the market.

West’s lawyer, Nicholas Gravante, claimed that the rapper has ‘diligently tried to work out these issues with Gap. Both directly and through a lawyer.’ However, ‘he got nowhere.’

Regardless, on August 16, West’s legal team sent Gap a breach of contract notice. Although the brand responded with a letter on August 23, Gravante wrote in a statement, “GAP left Ye no choice but to terminate their collaboration agreement.”

He continued, ‘GAP’s substantial non-compliance with its contractual obligations has been costly.’

Furthermore, he added, ‘You will now move forward promptly to make up for lost time. By opening Yeezy retail stores.’
