Liverpool make history against Manchester United as Mohamed Salah cements legendary status

The history books were torn up on Sunday night as Liverpool handed rivals Manchester United 7-0.
The Red Devils arrived at Anfield in fine form having won the Carabao Cup seven days earlier and suffered just one defeat in 2023 – no one saw that result coming.
Liverpool wiped the floor with their biggest rivals with a second-half performance that saw them score SIX times that will long be remembered by fans on both sides.
Braces from Cody Gakpo, Mohamed Salah, Darwin Nunez as well as Roberto Firmino’s late strike ensured the superb victory. It’s the first time since 1908 that three Liverpool players have scored at least two goals each in a single game against United.
It was Man United’s worst defeat in the Premier League and worst in the league since Boxing Day 1931.
It was also Liverpool’s biggest win over United in their history, overtaking the 7-1 triumph over them in 1895.
For Salah, it was a historic day as he became Liverpool’s top scorer in the Premier League.
His second-half brace took his tally to 129 – one ahead of Robbie Fowler in the Premier League. Quite a feat for the Egypt international, who joined Liverpool from Roma in 2017.
Salah’s incredible stats don’t end there, however. He is the first player in Liverpool history to score in six consecutive matches against United.
Only Alan Shearer (ten) has scored more times against the Red Devils than the 30-year-old in the Premier League, with Salah’s brace taking him to nine goals against them, passing Sergio Aguero and Thierry Henry in stride.
He has also received more yellow cards at Anfield against United since the 2017/18 season for taking his shirt off in celebration (twice), than they have scored (once).
Salah also picked up two assists from the ex-Chelsea star, becoming the first player in Europe to score 20 goals and ten assists in all competitions – tallying 22 goals and 11 assists so far in only his 37th game.
Liverpool’s dominance over United at Anfield doesn’t end on this Sunday, with the club’s last eight home games ending 2-0, 0-0, 0-0, 3-1, 2-0, 0-0 , 4-0 and 7-0 – 18-1 on aggregate.
In fact, the last time United scored at Anfield was in 2018 with 11 Liverpool goals since unanswered.
Gakpo has produced his best performance in a Reds shirt as he has been terrific throughout the season, including at PSV Eindhoven, and has been directly involved in 25 goals in 22 league appearances in 2022/23 (13 goals, 12 assists).
His strikes against Liverpool’s biggest rivals United and Everton make him the first Reds player to do so at home since Daniel Sturridge in 2013/14.
A dream day for Jurgen Klopp’s men but for Man United the investigation has begun and is set to continue for a while yet.
