Morgan Puts On Show In Acrobatics And Tumbling Debut

BALTIMORE, Md. (Feb. 10, 2024)–The Morgan State Acrobatics and Tumbling team made its inaugural debut on Saturday afternoon as it hosted the third-ranked Quinnipiac Bobcats at Hill Field House.

The Lady Bears would fall short, finishing the meet with 220.770 points, while the Bobcats finished with a total of 262.580 points.

The sport of acrobatics and tumbling comprises of six events: Compulsory, Acro, Pyramid, Toss, Tumbling and concludes with the Team event. Each event has anywhere from three, four or six heats.

As the Lady Bears completed the first meet of the season, Morgan performed well and executed their skills wonderfully.

“I’m very excited about what we performed and competed today,” said Morgan State head coach Regina Smith. “We had some last-minute changes less than 24 hours ago. So being able to overcome the adversity and the challenges that we faced going into this meeting, I think they did extremely well for their inaugural meet.”

As start time for Morgan’s history making debut drew closer, Hill Field house was packed and electric with fans supporting the team.

Being that Morgan State is the first Division I Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU) Acrobatics and Tumbling team, there’s a lot of pressure.

“Yes, I do feel a lot of pressure. Not only just being the first team [at Morgan] but you’re now the first [Division I] HBCU,’ said freshman base and tumbler Tehya Purifoy. “We have a lot to put out. We have a lot to show. We are all very talented athletes.”

Throughout the meet the Lady Bears had some challenges that they know they must overcome.

“The officials told us that a way we can score higher is by being tighter,” Purifoy stated. “I have to keep working on my top, because my top is the kind of person where she can’t listen to everybody else. She has to look to the person that is picking her up.”

“We’re just in the beginning of our stages and I have a big dream. The students believe that dream and we’re coming for it,” said Smith. “So yeah, there might be some historic programs that have been on top, but we’re coming to take their place.”

The Lady Bears are back on the mat on Monday, February 19, 204 at 6:00 p.m., when they face Iona University at Hill Field House.
