Poland explains decision to send Western-made tanks to Ukraine — RT World News
Warsaw not only wants to support Kyiv, but push others to do the same, government spokesman says
Poland is transferring Leopard 2 tanks to Ukraine in a bid to entice other countries to follow in its footsteps, government spokesman Piotr Muller said on Wednesday. His comments came after Warsaw announced it would donate a heavy tank company to Kyiv “as part of the formation of a coalition.”
Speaking to TVP Info TV Channel, Muller claimed the transfer was a form of self-defense. “If we don’t defend Ukraine’s independence, we are the next target. This must be said directly,” he said.
He said another reason for the unprecedented decision to support kyiv with German-made armor was “enforce certain behaviors” by other states. “We want to force other countries to do the same,” explained the spokesperson.
The tank transfer still needs to be approved by Berlin. Germany has so far been reluctant to send the Leopard 2 to the conflict zone, despite growing pressure both at home and abroad. Chancellor Olaf Scholz argued that no other NATO country had made such weaponry available to Ukraine, and that Germany should not be the first to do so. He also said such moves should be coordinated with allies.
Muller noted that international pressure had already prompted Germany to increase its military support for Ukraine. He recalled that at the start of hostilities in the country, Berlin was unwilling to give arms to Ukraine, but after being nudged over the issue, he changed his position.
Russia has repeatedly warned the West against supporting Ukraine with weapons, arguing that this will only prolong the conflict. On Thursday, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova reiterated that Western weapons sent to Ukraine, as well as any foreign personnel using them, “are legitimate targets for the Russian armed forces”.
“If the West pretends it doesn’t know, that’s their problem” she added.
