Rumors surrounding Chelsea’s £127 million bid for Milan striker Rafael Leao have been gathering pace in recent days, with many believing the Blues are serious about signing the Portuguese. .
Chelsea transfer target Rafael Leao will not have a release clause which the Blues can activate this window, according to reports. It came after suggestions AC Milan had quoted his €150m (£127m) release clause as his valuation in talks for the winger.
Chelsea are interested in signing a striker late in the transfer window after a difficult start to the season, with the most recent result being a 3-0 defeat against Leeds United, where their attack was toothless.
The Blues sold Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner in the summer, and only brought in Raheem Sterling, so they will need more firepower for the rest of the season if they are to compete on all fronts.
Leao will not come cheap, especially given his importance to the team and this late stage of the window where it will be difficult to find a replacement for him.
Milan recognize the importance of Leao
It is believed that Milan will find it difficult to reject an offer of £127 million as they and many other Italian clubs are in no position to reject an offer of that magnitude.
The Portuguese has a contract with the club until 2024, but Milan are ready to offer him a new long-term deal to keep him at the San Siro well beyond that.
Milan recognize the importance of the player, having seen him contribute to 11 goals and 10 assists on their way to the Serie A title last season, which was their first since 2011.
There was interest in Leao from other clubs earlier in the window, with Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid both monitoring the situation but walking away from the deal due to the high cost involved.
It is believed that Chelsea are also looking at other ways to finish this deal before the transfer deadline, including offering Milan a few players as well as cash to get their man.
The Blues, meanwhile, are working on an agreement to bring Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to Stamford Bridge and that agreement seems to be completed in the coming days.
