Shiffrin misses the super-G, still in search of an 86th victory

KVITFJELL, Norway (AP) — Mikaela Shiffrin was in third place after the top 20 starters in a World Cup super-G on Sunday as the American skier missed out on a record 86th career win.
Shiffrin edged Italian leader Sofia Goggia by 0.29 seconds. Jasmine Flury of Switzerland was second 0.10 seconds behind.
Low clouds caused flat light and snowfall slowed most subsequent starts.
“It’s slow with the snow on the flat part,” Shiffrin said. “But I also felt very strong there pushing the limits, so I’m super happy with my race, actually, no matter what.”
The race was halted after Alice Robinson crashed and slipped into the safety nets on a tricky passage towards the end of her race, but the New Zealand rider emerged unscathed.
Shiffrin needs a win to match Ingemar Stenmark’s tally on the all-time winning list – between men and women. The Swede competed in the 1970s and 80s.
Shiffrin broke a tie on the all-time women’s roster with former USA teammate Lindsey Vonn in January. Vonn had 82 wins when she retired in 2019.
