Shooting at Alabama birthday party leaves 4 dead, several injured

Four people were killed and several people injured in a shooting at a birthday party Saturday night in Dadeville, the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said.

The shooting occurred at the birthday party around 10:30 p.m. Sgt. Jeremy Burkett of the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency said. There was no initial confirmation on what led up to the shooting. It was not immediately known whether a suspect was in custody.

“There were four lives tragically lost in this incident and there were scores of injuries,” Burkett said at a Sunday morning news conference.

The shooting rocked the small town of 3,200 people. Dadeville Chief Jonathan L. Floyd paused to regain his composure before speaking at the press conference.

“What we had to face is something no community should have to endure. I just ask for your patience. This is going to be a long process, but I sincerely ask for your prayers,” Floyd said.

Pastor Ben Hayes, who is the chaplain for the Dadeville Police Department and the local high school football team, said most of the victims were teenagers as the shooting happened at a party birthday party for a 16 year old. He said the shooting rocked the small town where serious crime is rare.

“One of the young men who was killed was one of our star athletes and just a great guy. So I got to know a lot of those students. Dadeville is a small town and that’s going to affect everyone in that area. said Hayes.

WRBL-TV reported that the filming occurred at a dance studio. The station showed footage of crime scenes around the Mahogany Masterpiece Dance Studio and nearby buildings and a heavy police presence.
