Steelers’ Cam Heyward wins Walter Payton Man of the Year award

LAS VEGAS (AP) — Pittsburgh Steelers defensive lineman Cam Heyward received the NFL’s Walter Payton Man of the Year award, presented to him Thursday evening by Prince Harry.

“I want to say thank you to the Pittsburgh Steelers for giving me this opportunity,” Heyward said. “Mike T (Tomlin), it’s an honor to be coached by you. I couldn’t play for any other coach. To my teammates, I’m thankful to be your teammate.”

Each of the teams nominated one player for the prestigious honor named for the late Payton, a Hall of Fame running back for the Chicago Bears. The award recognizes a player for community service and excellence on the field. It has been given annually since 1970.

This was the sixth time the Steelers nominated Heyward for the award. Heyward created the Heyward House Foundation that supports several initiatives in the Pittsburgh area. The foundation also honors his father, Craig “Ironhead” Heyward, a fullback who played 11 seasons in the NFL. He died in 2006 at 39 of brain cancer.

All 32 nominees will receive a donation of up to $55,000 in their name to their charity of choice. Heyward will receive a $250,000 donation to the charity of his choice. All donations are courtesy of the NFL Foundation and Nationwide.

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott won the award last season.
