Oklahoma has executed 50-year-old James Coddington, according to the state’s director of corrections. The news was confirmed on Thursday morning that Coddington was sentenced to die for killing Albert Hale in 1997. At the time, he was also struggling with a crack cocaine addiction. Let’s add that the Republican Government Kevin Stitt on Wednesday rejected his request for clemency. However, the man’s lawyers and advocates had hoped that his life would be spared as he expressed his remorse for killing Hale but unfortunately, nothing of the sort happened. Check out more details here.

Reports also confirm that Coddington had a traumatic childhood and faced many things as a child that left him mentally unstable. While on Oklahoma’s death row, he also underwent rehabilitation. When speaking about the incident to reporters, the Director of the Department of Corrections Scott Crow said that the time of death was 10:16 AM. Mitchell Hale, the victim’s son, also told reporters that today is neither a good day nor a bad day as it is just a new day for their family. After attending the execution, he said that in the end they can move forward and it will not even cure anything, closing the chapter.

Now, let’s mention that Coddington’s execution was the first of more than two dozen state officials to carry out between now and December 2024, at a pace of about one man per month. It is reported that opponents have been critical of the plan and that there are outstanding questions about some prisoners such as their innocence or mental health for execution, their lawyers said and critics pointed to the recent history of the state of ‘confused lethal injections. Those troublemakers who rolled and rolled on the gurney for 43 minutes before suffering a heart attack had led the officials to stop the executions during the investigations.

Sean Murphy of the Associated Press said that Coddington’s chest heaved during the execution but it was not dramatic or to the point that his body came off the gurney. Murphy was one of five media witnesses to the execution. He said that the prisoner’s breathing seemed to be labored. Coddington in his last words thanked his friends, family and lawyers, according to media reports. He also addressed Stitt saying that I don’t blame you and I forgive you. Mitchell Hale said Coddington expressed remorse for killing Hale. Stay tuned with us to get more such updates and latest news.
