SARASOTA − Vince Cherry is out as boys basketball coach at Cardinal Mooney Catholic High School, it was confirmed Monday afternoon.
Cherry did not coach in the Cougars’ most recent game, a 66-39 loss Friday evening at Sarasota High in the second half of a girls/boys doubleheader involving the schools.
A former football and basketball standout at Riverview High, Cherry was elevated from varsity assistant coach to Cardinal Mooney head coach Aug. 21, 2021, replacing Clayton Slentz. Cherry also served as the Cougars’ junior varsity coach for two seasons.

In Cherry’s first season with the varsity, the Cougars went 23-5 and lost to Northside Christian, 78-76, in overtime in the opening round of the Class 3A-Region 2 tournament. Last year, Cardinal Mooney went 17-10 and lost to Bradenton Christian School in the district final and did not receive an at-large bid to the regionals.
The Cougars were 16-7 before Friday’s loss at Sarasota.
Cardinal Mooney owns the No. 1 seed in this week’s Class 3A-District 11 tournament and plays the winner of the game between fourth-seed Out-of-Door Academy and fifth-seed Sarasota Military Academy at 7 p.m. Thursday at home at Patterson Pavilion.
Assistant coach Terrence Garner, who coached the Cougars on Friday, will take over the rest of the season.
Cardinal Mooney school officials did not discuss Cherry’s situation, other than he is not coaching. Cherry’s photo on the school Website for has been removed as boys basketball coach and the email contact is Director of Athletics Rafael Fernandez.
